　　清秀美丽的少女托博(伊万·雷切尔·伍德饰)与弟弟罗尼(罗瑞·库尔金饰)和当警察的父亲韦德(大卫·摩斯饰)在小镇中过着平淡乏味的生活。一天，托博和朋友们到海边旅行，在途中的加油站里遇到了打工的哈兰(爱德华·诺顿饰)，一身牛仔装扮的哈兰惹来众人的讥笑，而托博却被他的魅力所打动，邀他一同前往。哈兰向老板请假，老板称如果他离开就不能再回去，率性的哈兰拂袖而去。

　　可想而知，两个年轻人坠入了爱河，哈兰青睐于托博在同龄人中少有的稚纯，而托博则陶醉于哈兰的魅力和浪漫。其实，在哈兰帅气的外表下，隐藏着不堪回首的过去，出身于单亲家庭的他曾是少年犯，他一直认为自己是个牛仔，住在简陋的汽车旅馆里，他经常对着镜子练着牛仔的拔枪动作。

　　托博将哈兰带回了家，因为罗尼是被领养的，平时父亲韦德又对他漠不关心，于是找不到男性偶像的罗尼很快喜欢上了哈兰，而当专横暴躁的韦德见到哈兰，很快看清了他的真面目，竭力阻挠女儿和他来往。哈兰也暗自怒火中烧，并打算帮助托博和罗尼脱离这个家庭，枪声中，一幕悲剧随即上演……

　　在油站打工的小伙子哈兰（爱德华·诺顿 Edward Norton 饰）有着很深的牛仔情结。他一身牛仔装，常常学牛仔拔枪的“神勇”模样。尽管很多人都嘲笑他，但少女托博（埃文·蕾切尔·伍德 Evan Rachel Wood 饰）却似乎和他意趣相投，二人堕入爱海。

　　哈兰跟随托博来到小镇的家中，这里住住托博的父亲韦德（大卫·摩斯 David Morse 饰）和弟弟罗尼（罗瑞·库尔金 Rory Culkin 饰）。韦德专横强硬，弟弟一直都在父亲的压抑下成长，个性敏感内向。常常一起外出骑马射枪的哈兰，成为了罗尼的精神依托。慢慢的，罗尼爱上了这个牛仔。

幕后制作

　　本片是导演大卫·雅各布森对好莱坞经典西部片的献礼之作，成为一部风格鲜明的现代西部片。雅各布森在巴黎逗留的1年间，经常去一家名为“Action Christine”的小型影院，这家影院专门放映好莱坞老电影，西部传奇故事让他产生灵感决定构思一个剧本。他想起童年的圣费尔南多峡谷，辽阔的旷野中，除了无尽的孤寂，还有对暴力的畏惧，让人产生强烈的求助欲。在对传统西部片元素的准确把握下，雅各布森开始在法国国家图书馆里创作剧本，一部现代西部片逐渐成形。
